My name is Galatea (Teia for short), and since 1995, I've been translating books and writings of all kinds, from poetry to political satire, from science fiction to scientific research. A million words and counting... Words that express the thoughts, ideas, style and tone another writer worked hard to set down in his or her language and that deserve to be read in other languages.

My French to English literary translations stand out for several reasons:

~ I practice translation as a literary art, so I do not use software (machine translation) tools except when a client requires it.

~ Because I speak and write French fluently, I can express the true meaning of phrases. But since I'm a native English speaker, my translations read like originals.

~ A long-time writer myself, I understand the "nuts and bolts" of writing. I know structure, plot, characterization, POV, etc. My method is to first read a manuscript, as many as three times, with intense concentration, to visualize the story and understand it. Then I translate, page by page, expressing the style, the tone and the beauty of the author's work. This done, I revise and keep revising until the work is polished and true. Revising is the heart of my work.

 

~ A trained journalist, I've learned to respect deadlines. And writing for many different magazines, journals and newspapers has taught me to adapt my tone to theirs. This helps me translate in a way that preserves the author's voice.
